Reporting Guidance
Side channels are secondary channels which are part of a larger stream or river and convey water all or part of the calendar year.
When reporting side channel metrics there are 2 important factors to consider. 1. Is this a new or existing feature? 2. What is the inudation frequency (ie how frequently will fish be able to utilize this habitat)?
Step 1: Estimate the thalweg length of the side channel.
Step 2: Estimate the frequency that fish will have access to this habitat pre construction (ie does this have year around connection? only during ordinary high water events? or greater flows?) under pre-project conditions. What size flow event waters this channel?
Step 3: Estimate the frequency that fish will have access to this habitat post restoration conditions. What size flow event waters this channel post construction?
